Paolo Sorrentino in conversation with editor Cristiano Travaglioli about ‘The Hand of God’

The full-length recording of the British Film Editors ‘Virtual Glass of Wine’ online event that happened on 26th January 2022. The Hand of God is currently available to see in cinemas and on Netflix. It is on the BAFTA awards long lists in five categories: Editing, Director, Original Screenplay, Casting, Best film not in the English language. The Hand of God is the story of a boy growing up in tumultuous 1980s Naples and is Academy Award-winning writer and director Paolo Sorrentino's most personal film yet. It is a story full of unexpected joys – such as the arrival in Naples of football legend Diego Maradona – and an equally unexpected tragedy. Fate plays its part, joy and tragedy intertwine, and a young man’s future is set in motion. Sorrentino returns to his hometown to tell his most personal story, a tale of fate and family, sports and cinema, love and loss. “Matching the dazzling maximalism of The Great Beauty, his Oscar-winning 2013 tribute to the city of Rome, the film is bawdy and wistful, with a rich vein of melancholy running through it.” – Adam White, The Independent “Throughout, Sorrentino and his cast make these teenage recollections twinge with freshness. Like our own sharpest memories of adolescence, the haze of nostalgia doesn't dull their edge.” – Robbie Collin, The Daily Telegraph “The Hand of God is filled with the kind of detail that could only have come from observation-and memory. That one family could contain so many unique and peculiar people is a reminder that truth is almost always stranger than fiction.” - Leonard Maltin British Film Editors is a professional association that celebrates and promotes the art, craft and science of editing.
